A Walk in the Old Town

After our visit to The Humble Administrator's Garden we took a leisurely stroll through the Old Town and down Pingjiang Lu.  This is a very old area indeed, several centuries old.  Shops wedged between or beneath houses, with washing hanging from anything strong enough to hold it up.  Although there are pockets of rubbish the actual street is surprisingly clean.

I don't think this van or bike will be going anywhere in a hurry.

The trees had all been heavily pruned but I think this would be a lovely shady street in the summer.

Many historic bridges cross the canal.

Rubbish is constantly being picked and removed from the canals, but I still wouldn't care to swim in there.

Boatmen collecting rubbish with nets.

Water taxies on the canal.

Enticing displays for tourists just off Pingjiang Lu.

Waiting for a fare.... on land

... or water.

Fruit and vegetable barrows.

A fan shop.

More washing in the sunshine.

These tiny birds spend their lives in these cages and during the day are taken to the park or placed together on the street like this so they can 'socialise'.

Breathe in to allow the vehicles to pass.

A bridal couple in traditional dress probably going to have photos taken BEFORE the wedding.

Lovely teapots, vases and bowls.

No overhead costs for this flower seller.

Green, not red, post boxes.

  1. Brings back wonderful memories! Have I told you the subway is open now? So we could get to Pingjiang Lu in no time - and no hassles about finding a taxi to get us home again. This is probably the one thing that has really transformed our lives (though we've only caught it once so far) - shame you had to miss it by just a week!!!
